The Cogwise workshop

Est. 2009 — Patong, Phuket

A workshop where
each watch finds its pace again.

Cogwise began as a small bench operation in Patong and has stayed that way by design — focused, measured, and genuinely interested in the craft.

Our Story

Sixteen years at the bench
in Thaweewong Road.

Cogwise opened in 2009 when Nattapong Suriyan, a watchmaker trained in Switzerland and later in Bangkok, decided to bring proper movement servicing to Phuket. At the time, the options for anyone with a mechanical watch in need of attention were limited to sending it abroad or accepting a rough estimate from a jewellery counter. He wanted to offer something different: a clear-eyed assessment, honest pricing, and work done with the watch on the bench in front of you if you wished to watch.

The workshop on Thaweewong Road started as a two-bench operation. It still is. That is deliberate. Keeping the team small means every piece that comes through the door is handled by someone who knows exactly what they are doing and has the time to do it well. There is no production pressure, no queue of fifty movements waiting in trays. Each watch gets the attention it deserves.

Over the years Cogwise has worked on everyday quartz watches, vintage automatics from the 1960s and 70s, and complicated pieces with moon phase and perpetual calendar functions. The approach does not change between them. Careful disassembly, proper cleaning, correct lubrication, and honest reporting of what was found and what was done.

Mission

"A watch that runs well and is well understood is a pleasure to own. Our work is to return it to that state, or keep it there."

Values

  • Transparency at every stage — no work begins without a written estimate
  • Respect for the object — originality preserved unless the owner instructs otherwise
  • Measured pace — quality over speed, especially on complicated pieces
  • Plain communication — results reported in language that makes sense

How We Work

Standards that do not move
depending on the job.

Calibrated Lubricants

We stock and use movement lubricants specified for each component type — mainspring grease, escapement oils, and keyless-work lubricants are not interchangeable, and we do not treat them as though they were.

Timing Equipment

Every movement service ends with a run on the timing machine across multiple positions. We record the amplitude, beat error, and rate, and give you those numbers in writing.

Water Resistance Testing

After any service that involves opening the case, we use a pressure testing device to confirm the watch meets its stated resistance rating before it leaves the bench.

Written Service Records

Each piece leaves with a printed service sheet noting what was examined, what was replaced, and what the timing results showed. This record is yours to keep alongside the watch.

Photographic Documentation

For restoration work, photographs are taken at each agreed milestone. You receive these images as part of the final handover — a visual record of the work from arrival to completion.

Secure Custody

Every watch in our care is logged by serial number on arrival and stored in a locked cabinet overnight. We handle your piece as though we are responsible for it — because we are.

About Our Work

Watch servicing in Phuket, approached with the patience the craft requires.

Phuket attracts people from many countries, and watches travel with them. Some arrive in need of a simple battery change after months in a drawer. Others have been worn daily for years and need a proper movement service to bring them back within specification. A few are family pieces that have not run in a decade and deserve a full assessment before any decisions are made.

Cogwise is in a position to handle all of these cases because the workshop is set up specifically for this kind of work. We are not a jewellery shop that replaces batteries as a side service. We are a watchmaker's workshop where battery replacement happens to be the simplest thing we do.

For visitors spending time on the island, we can often turn around a battery and seal service on the same day. For movement work and restoration, we ask for the time the job requires. Most movement services are completed within ten working days. Restorations are scoped individually.

We work on wristwatches — quartz, automatic, hand-wound, and complicated — from a broad range of Swiss, Japanese, and German makers. We do not work on pocket watches or clocks, and we do not sell new watches.
